PESHAWAR: Peshawar Medical College established by Prime Foundation enjoys a unique position among the medical colleges in Pakistan as it has established a Department of Undergraduate Medical Research to promote research culture among the healthcare professionals from the beginning of their career. This department organizes a conference every year and recently celebrated a Decade of Learning and Innovation by organizing the 10th Undergraduate Medical Research Conference from March 15-16, 2017. It attracted eighty four posters in thirty eight disciplines and twenty-four oral presentations. The poster presentations covered Basic Sciences, Dental Sciences and Allied, Medical Education, Medical Therapeutics, Medicine and Allied, Mother and Child Health, Obstetrics Gynaecology, Public Health, Social Sciences besides Surgery and Allied. The students were also invited to draw paintings depicting Depression and how to cope with it.
It is indeed commendable that the institution has sustained this academic activity for the last ten years for which credit goes to its founders, college administration and the Undergraduate Medial Research Department currently headed by Dr. Afshan Khattak in particular. The concluding session held on Day two of the conference on March 16th was chaired by Prof. Arshad Javaid Dean at Lady Reading Hospital Peshawar. Prof. Hafeez Ur Rehman, Prof.Afshan Khattak and Dr. Iftikhar Ahmad were also present on this occasion.
Prizes and mementoes were presented to the best posters and best oral presentations in different disciplines on this occasion. Peshawar Medical College, it may be mentioned here started its first academic session in March 2006 and soon got recognized by the PM&DC by completing all the formalities. Prime Foundation is a federally registered organization which is not owned by any individual or family but its Board of Directors comprise of dedicated multidisciplinary medical professionals and educationists. Since its inception, PRIME has given birth to a number of academic institutions which includes Peshawar Medical College and Peshawar Dental College besides Rueaidah Nursing College. It has also started Postgraduate Programs in Basic Medical and Dental Sciences, Postgraduate programme in Clinical Sciences. It has developed academic links with medical colleges in Malaysia and Indonesia. It has also started postgraduate Diploma in Ophthalmology in Hargesia in collaboration with WHO and Federation of Islamic Medical Associations. (FIMA) which is expected to have a great impact on eye care in East African Region. Prof. Najibul Haq is Dean of Peshawar Medical College while Prof.Sajjad Ahmad is Principal of the institution.
Institute of Public Health
It has also established an Institute of Public Health which has initiated a number of programmes for the uplift of the community addressing the social needs of the community and undertakes research in identified areas. It is coordinating with a number of national and international organizations which includes WHO, UNICEF, CIDA, GIZ, IDRF Canada, Mercy Malaysia, and IICO from Kuwait, Aga Khan Foundation from Pakistan and PIMA, FIMA besides Al-Khidmat Foundation Pakistan, Department of Health, and Government of Khyber PK.
It has three affiliated teaching hospitals which include Prime Teaching Hospital, Kuwait Teaching Hospital and Mercy Teaching Hospital. It follows a Human Development Based Curriculum. It has a separate Department of Medial Education, Department of IT and Medical Informatics.
Peshawar Medical College has also published a large number of health education leaflets to create awareness about different diseases and how to manage them. It has also published a book containing Hadees Curriculum for medical students.
