Recognition of Dentistry
at the highest level

Respected Mr. Shaukat Jawaid,

I read the content of Pulse International of January 1st 2021 issue with interest and particularly Off the Record column entitled - Recognition of Dentistry at the highest Level. In this regard, I submit the following:

“When publishing the opinion expressed by it would have been good to have confirmed the correctness of the expressed allegations particularly related to the lack of interest of Dr. Alvi in the Dental Profession. In fact, the current dental fraternity and the dental professionals have been very positively impacted by Honourable Dr. Arif Alvi and his team.

The credits of the establishment of the Pakistan Dental Association and its so many national and international level conferences and making it recognized as member of several international dental forums including the ADA, WHO, FDA, APDC, SADAF, The establishment of the Journal of the Pakistan Dental Association (JPDA - the then JOPDAK - Journal of the Pakistan Dental Association Karachi), the national and international activities, in the form of attendance and holding of the conferences of the South-Asian Dental Federation (SADAF), Asia Pacific Dental Federation (APDF), Federation Dentaire International (FDA) all primarily goes primarily to Dr. Arif Alvi.

Honourable Dr. Arif Alvi has been doing all these, despite the then senior dental fraternity of Pakistan having had obstacles for him to enter as a faculty into any dental institute despite having had acquired postgraduate qualifications in the then two mostly required clinical disciplines of Orthodontics and Prosthodontics. The humble and progressive attitude of Dr. Arif Alvi, toward dentistry have been very evident by having offered, for free his own Hospital for the FCPS training in the specialty of orthodontics. He has also acted even as one of the lead in establishing the postgraduate dental training at the CPSP, as Principal Supervisor and as the CPSP Examiner for almost all the membership and Fellowship examinations. This was because in those days, we were the only few qualified people from abroad. The Honourable Dr. Arif Alvi, despite being not welcomed by the then senior faculty in the dental institutes, had used to travel all-over the country to lecture and examine dental students there in the dental institutes of the country on his own cost for his travelling or staying.

Regarding the allegations that he has not duly acted for the establishment of separate Dental Commission or Council I rather support Dr. Arif Alvi’s concerns and view as very well-grounded. This concern he has already expressed regarding the required ability and capabilities of the current dental fraternity for managing Pakistan Dental Council/Commission, in his first interview after taking over the President of Pakistan. He has then again endorsed these concerns, in his inaugural speech at the first International Dental Conference organized by the UHS Lahore. Hence, I request this communication be published in Pulse International keeping up the professional ethics.”

Best Wishes & Regards.

Editor’s Note: The discipline of dentistry will never get proper recognition nor the dental profession its due respect among healthcare professionals until the dentists have their own regulatory body to monitor dental education and hold the dental profession accountable and monitor their practice. For all this improvement in Dental Journalism is a pre-requisite. Hence, it is high time that the dental profession finds some honest, competent, experienced dentists who not only have academic interest but are prepared to work devotedly for the welfare of dental profession. This was the path adopted by many countries including the United States many years ago.
